Many people ask what is the solution for the multifaceted problem Ethiopia finds itself in. While there are no simple, or quick fix, solutions for problems as complicated as ours, the following may point towards relative peace and stability, which in turn will help us work towards some lasting political solutions:

  1. Stop the war on Tigray, Oromia, Gumuz, Argobbaa, Qemant, Konso, etc.
  2. Remove the Eritrean forces from Tigray, Oromia, and elsewhere in Ethiopia.
  3. Remove Amhara Region’s Special Forces and Militia from Oromia, Tigray, and Benishangul-Gumuz.
  4. Allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need, especially those in Tigray, Walloo, and Metekkel.
  5. Stop all social militarization schemes (eg. arming civilians, propagating war-talk on state-and public-media outlets) and mobilization of the language of othering peoples.
  6. Restore the elected government of Tigray and allow it to resume its task. To facilitate this, complete removal of the Ethiopian military is needed. An international peace keeping force may be deployed to monitor and oversee the departure of all foreign troops and complete cessation of armed hostilities.
  7. Set up Transitional Regional Governments (by a coalition of all political parties) until such time as to allow the conduct of elections (within the framework of the Federal and State Constitutions). This has to be done in all the regions except in Tigray (where there is already a duly constituted and electorally-popularly mandated government).
  8. Allow International Inquiry Commissions to investigate gross human rights violations, mass atrocity crimes, genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. Also, allow an international committee of oversight for MINORITY groups (especially those in the Amhara NRS–eg. Walloo Oromos, Qemant, and Agaw; in Benishangul-Gumuz such as the Gumuz, the Oromo, and others; and Amharas in Oromia (eg. in Western and Eastern Wallagga) and SNNPRS.
  9. Set up a provisional government of technocrats to run the day-to-day business of government until such time as there is a consensus among all concerned political forces to return to the constitutional signposts within the framework of which a genuinely democratic election is conducted.
  10. Also, it is imperative to unconditionally release all political prisoners including Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba, Abdi Regassa, Gemechu Ayyaanaa, Michael Booran, Kennasaa Ayyaanaa, Battee Urgessaa, Lammii Beenyaa, etc. Once all political forces are safe and secure in the country, then convene an all-inclusive political dialogue among ALL the political forces of the country so that they can agree on the steps towards a genuine transition to democracy.
  11. If Abiy Ahmed wants to play a part in the peaceful transition to come, he must step down graciously and exit the scene quietly. (This may help him negotiate amnesty for his crimes committed so far. If this is rejected, as it is likely to be, then he shall have to be arrested immediately and face trial either in Ethiopia or in international judicial fora).
  12. After the first democratic election, referendum should be tabled as an agenda, especially in regions where the demand for self-determination is persistent. To facilitate the management of the process, the newly elected Parliament shall have enacted specific legislations regarding the referenda to be organized.

Doing these, even partly, may contribute to laying down the first building blocks of a lasting peace in Ethiopia and in the wider neighborhood.
